Nonprofit Business License
Businesses qualify for the nonprofit license if they are registered with the Office of the Secretary of State as a nonprofit corporation.
Home Occupation Business Licenses
Home Occupations are businesses that run out of a person's home. They include, but are not limited to, web-based businesses, daycares, and businesses where the central office is out of the home. When applying for the state license and City endorsement, indicate that your business is a home occupation. Staff may contact you for additional information before approving your business license application based on your neighborhood's requirements. You will need to complete an additional Home Occupation Application with the City. Please click HERE to start that application.
Non-Resident Business
If your business is physically located outside City limits, but conducts business within City limits, your license fee is determined by gross annual income earned within the City's boundaries.
Solicitor/Peddler/Canvasser Licenses
The City of Duvall requires peddlers/solicitors/canvassers to acquire and maintain a City Solicitor's License. A peddler/solicitor/canvasser is defined in the Duvall Municipal Code § 5.03 et seq. as any person, either a principal or agent, who goes from place to place within the City and who:
- Sells, takes orders for, or offers to sell, any goods, wares, or merchandise, whether collecting in advance for such goods, wares, or merchandise; and/or
- Sells, takes orders for, or offers to sell services, whether collecting in advance for such services and/or
- Seeks contributions or donations to private causes, as opposed to tax-exempt charities and/or
- Seeks opinions, preferences, or other information for commercial purposes
- There are some exemptions to this license requirement. For more details, view the entire peddlers, solicitors, and canvassers code.
There is a $55.00 fee per person for these activities, including $10.00 for a criminal history background investigation. Each solicitor must wear a laminated City-issued badge to notify residents. For more information, please contact the City Clerk by e-mail or 425-788-1185.
What should I do if there is a solicitor/peddler/canvasser in my neighborhood?
Safeguard yourself and your home from unscrupulous door-to-door solicitors:
- Always ask solicitors for identification to verify which company they are working for. If they refuse, ask them to leave.
- Ask to see their City of Duvall License. If they do not have one, ask them to leave.
- If you encounter a solicitor who becomes aggressive or refuses to take "no" for an answer, ask them to leave, shut the door, and call 911.
- Never invite a solicitor into your home. You can say "no thank you" without opening the door.
- Never give a solicitor your Social Security number.
- Don't give a salesperson cash or a check. Ask to order directly from the company online or receive a bill to pay upon receipt of the product or service.
- If an item seems too good or too inexpensive to be true, it probably is.
- Orders taken are required to be in writing, in duplicate (you get a copy), and to state the solicitor's name as it appears on their license, the solicitor's permit number, the address of the solicitor and their employer, the terms of the agreement, and the amount paid to the solicitor.
- You may post a "No Solicitor" sign on private property.
Please remember that unless it is an emergency, you can contact the Duvall Police Department at the non-emergency number (425) 556-2500 to report an unlicensed solicitor, peddler, or canvasser.
If you wish to verify whether an individual has a valid license, please call the City Clerk's Office at (425) 939-8089 or e-mail us.
